At the 2024 State of the City Address, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu announced the launch of a major new pilot program to much fanfare called BPS Sundays. BPS Sundays launched February 4, 2024 as a partnership between the City of Boston and key cultural institutions in the City to give Boston Public Schools students and their families free access to these institutions. The program builds on existing access programs at each institution, while creating a common free-access experience coordinated by the City. On the first and second Sundays of each month, every Boston Public Schools student and up to three guests received free admission to Boston Children’s Museum, the Franklin Park Zoo, the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science, and the New England Aquarium. The groundbreaking program allowed students and families to enjoy, discover, and learn at these vital Boston institutions. Over 5,000 students and their families took advantage of this opportunity and visited the Museum through August of 2024, with 41 percent visiting the Museum for the first time. Looking ahead, the Museum and its fellow institutions are excited to be able to continue this exciting pilot program through December, and are working closely with the City on a potential expansion of the program that will allow all Boston school children to participate.
