A Resilient Waterfront

The Museum continued to make progress in its ambitious multi-year resilience planning initiative to protect the Museum property from rising sea levels, while also tapping the potential for immersive play and learning interactions with the natural environment. Following through on its Waterfront Master Plan, developed with design firm Sasaki Associates, the Museum collaborated with engineering and construction firms—ARUP, VHB, Turner Construction, Haley & Aldrich, and Thornton Tomasetti—to craft a strategy for addressing the Museum’s interior vulnerabilities. This strategy will guide the adaptation of the Museum’s internal systems, emphasizing the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical infrastructure.

Over the coming year, the project’s focus will be developing the detailed construction plans for the necessary interior changes. These interior modifications will likely require elevating the first floor and relocating critical infrastructure, while at the same time including an exciting re-envisioning of a new lobby experience, exhibit galleries, event spaces, and creation of a rooftop terrace, all meant to preserve and improve the unique Museum experience.
